Meaning lotus flower in Hokkien – the local Chinese dialect, ‘Lean Hwa Ho’ was what locals called the street which The Blue Mansion was once located on, translating to flowing street of the water lotuses. In modern times, the city changed around the mansion, leaving us now on Leith Street.

Sinkeh, which means ‘fresh off the boat’ is a nod towards the arduous and gruelling journey which Cheong Fatt Tze and thousands of other Chinese immigrants embarked upon travelling to Southeast Asia with hopes of making a name for themselves. When first arriving at these shores, they were referred to as ‘sinkeh’ by many locals, but through hard work and struggle, many became very successful, earning respect and recognition.

Nanyang, which translates into ‘South seas’ was a place where many Chinese immigrants became successful.
