Restoration

Conservation Objectives
Decades in planning and six years in execution, the tedious restoration process was driven by the aims of preserving, conserving and restoring as much of the original fabric of the Mansion as possible. The principal approach was to retain the total integrity of the Mansion with the application of traditional methods, with very minor modern intervention, such as waterproofing.

Local Penang artisans and materials were utilized, wherever possible, with imported artisanship when dealing with original Chinese materials in order to ensure correct application and usage. In the philosophy of 'treading lightly and touching softly', the restoration proceeded in the following:

Restrained repairs' - changing only what required changing

Replication of the old' - using only traditional methods and materials

Re-use and recycling' - little was discarded, particularly the timber and tiles

Practicality and attention to details'

Research consultation and networking' - with other conservation consultants and artisans
